Of all the ways you can make sales, email is by far the most effective, most automated, and most profitable method.

Email is proven across many businesses, whether they are selling physical products, done-for-you services, or information products. 

  • Politicians use email to build awareness.
  • Non profits use email to solicit donations.
  • All product launches use email marketing.
  • Affiliate marketers use email follow up and solo ads.
  • Your bank uses email to keep you informed. (And to sell)
  • All online marketers (every single one) uses email.

If you ever doubt that email marketing works, ask yourself this one question …

So we know from experience that email marketing works.

But, for some reason, it’s just not working for you the way you see it done by others. 

This is an all too common problem. Happily, there is an easy solution.

That solution starts with recognizing one very important truth …

In fact, it is a question I ask almost all my consulting clients:

Email marketing is working ON you but is it working FOR you?

So how can we get email marketing working for you quickly and easily?

Here are five ways you can use email to sell more.

1. BE A BLESSING TO YOUR READERS

I know … not what you might have been expecting, right? This is supposed to be about selling!

Hear me out. 

Zig Ziglar famously said “You can have everything in life you want if you will help enough other people get what they want.”

And Zig was a pretty good salesman. 🙂

I believe that and live by it. In fact, it’s part of my mission statement.

But, more importantly than my take on it, giving before expecting to receive works!

  • It is the basis behind the idea of reciprocity.
  • It is ancient wisdom, found in the Bible.
  • It has been proven to work in countless businesses.
  • It is consistent with how you want to be treated.
  • It is the basis of content marketing.

Ask yourself this … if a person you met provided the answer to a problem you were facing wouldn’t you feel a natural sense of loyalty and appreciation to that person?

Of course you would!

And that is why method 1 is to share the best information, recommendations, insights, humor, and more with the people on your list.

2. FOLLOW UP EMAIL MARKETING

Here is the cold reality … over 95% of people who visit any site you promote will not buy on the first visit.

Here is a massively important question … what happens to the 95% who do NOT buy?

Answer: They never come back.

You see, people used to bookmark a site and return. Now they Google and click results on the first page. 

By the way, when is the last time YOU bookmarked a site?

This logic is why follow up email works. And it’s why you must begin using it today if at all possible. 

Focus all of your efforts on building your list and you will be rewarded. 

That focus includes building your list from every resource possible, including …

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Your blog
  • Squeeze pages
  • Webinars and podcasts
  • Texting (Yes, texting)
  • And many more

If you were my brother or sister and there was ONE piece of advice I would give you, it would be to focus on building your list and email marketing

They ARE the foundation of success online.

3. HELP THEM ASCEND

Unless you want to make one sale and quit there, you are going to want to offer more help to people who buy from you.

That will sometimes mean offering them a complimentary product, also called an upsell. The best upsells help a person achieve results faster or at scale.

Other times it will mean offering them a done-for-you service that helps them get results faster. 

The best way to know what to offer them is to ask. Simple and effective, asking what a person needs is SO much better than just shoving 19 upsells at them hoping they will buy. 

The best way to ask is to use four magic words …

4. HELP BUYERS SUCCEED

Unless your product is so simple anyone can use it immediately, sending a series of “here’s where to start” messages will create happy customers and more sales.

That’s because happy customers buy more!

The best way to do this is to look at your product as if you are a first-time customer. 

But when you do, remember this. 

  • Your new customer is in a hurry.
  • They are distracted.
  • They need a solution and want your product to be that solution.

But, in many cases, they are not sure where to start. 

Help them see the path. Be their guide to the success they want.

In so doing you will make a customer for life.

5. HELP THEM ADVOCATE FOR YOU

I am often asked “what is the best type of advertising?”

My answer is always the same … “word of mouth”.

Nothing is more powerful than Jane telling Sam about a new product she just purchased and why he might want to consider it too. 

This is called “brand advocacy” and it simply cannot be bought.

It must be earned. 

How do you help customers become advocates for your brand? I believe there are a few key factors.

  1. Reward their loyalty. More than just thanking them, give them something tangible along the lines of a free product or a deep discount.
  2. Be available. We are all busy but never be too busy for your clients, if you want more business that is.
  3. Understand their journey and provide more answers. All customers are on a journey. Your product helps them take ONE step. Now how can you help them take the next?

Email is tremendously effective. So effective that I know successful marketers that do nothing but email. 

But it can be one of those methods that gets overlooked in the rush to find the Next Big Thing.

Don’t fall into that trap – make sure your email marketing is rock-solid FIRST and then experiment all you want with the “next big thing” as time allows.
