This is the second part of a two-part series on creating the perfect lead magnet.
To read part 1 click here. It will open in a new window so you can return here and finish the series.
Here are the final three, of six, factors when it comes to creating a great lead magnet. Make a list of these six and use it as a checklist when you create lead magnets. If you do you will see conversions rise and your list will grow faster.
Both very good things indeed.
A great lead magnet positions you properly
A great lead magnet will make you look like an authority in your field.
But what are you to do if you are not yet an authority in your field? There are three solutions to help.
- Curate content from leaders in your field. “Roundup” the best of the best thinking from these leaders and create a report that saves the reader time. Provide links to these leaders websites (it’s the right thing to do) but make them affiliate links if you can.
- Interview an expert and share the interview as your lead magnet. This is a tried and true method that works as well today as it did in 2002. I’m doing this very thing next week – interviewing someone who knows more than I do about media buying and using part of that interview as a lead magnet. This method works!
- Buy a report with resale rights from a trusted source. Ethical resale rights sellers do deep research and employ native speaking writers to create top-quality products. They then sell these products to others with the right to give them away. This is a proven method that is fast and very effective.
Here’s a tip for creating lead magnets from your own experience. Get in the habit of making good notes when you try new types of marketing, split test or write copy. Just the simple act of making notes as you go can provide you an easy way to have loads of research at your fingertips.
I’ve done this for years now and it really pays off over time. I literally use a legal pad and file folders because that’s how I like to do things. But Evernote, One Note, Day One or any other app will work just as well.
A great lead magnet provides instant access
People want instant gratification. So give them what they want with your lead magnet!
The very best lead magnets today are PDF files (old school) and instant access to a webinar replay (new school). In this case, old school beats new school because PDFs live forever on the hard drives of those who download them.
Some say that the length of the PDF needs to be under three pages. But a recent survey (by me) revealed that the same people preaching that were providing 50 page PDFs on average.
The bottom line here is simple – do what you want to do. But remember the phrase useful but incomplete.
You definitely want your lead magnet to be useful to your new subscriber. But if you tell everything you know they will have no need to buy anything, and that can defeat the purpose of your business.
Just create the lead magnet you would want to read and all will be well.
A great lead magnet is shareable
You want people to share your lead magnet. More importantly, it is important to realize they will share it whether you want them to or not.
The way to do this is simple. I will use both the PDF and webinar replay as examples.
With a PDF make the second page your “branding” page. Say something like “this report brought to you by” and then list your site and the top three benefits to doing business with you. Then put a big old link in there and let it go.
With a webinar replay make the first few minutes about you and your site and brand. Don’t take too long on this but it is common practice to “warm up” the audience on a webinar so you should be good to go.
If you are making an offer on the webinar, you can pivot to the offer as well but do that near the end, with teasers at about 10 minutes, 30 minutes and 45 minutes. Those are times proven to be when people drop out of a webinar most often.
So there you have it – six ways to create the perfect lead magnet for your offer in your market. Taking the time to create the best lead magnet possible is important because sales funnels are vital to your success.
The online selling landscape is changing. The old ways of selling won’t get the job done anymore, and we all need to adapt to these new realities.
If you create great lead magnets and offer them on great squeeze pages you will build your list, and your influence faster and easier than ever before. Best of all, you can move on to other work while your automated systems work for you 24 hours a day.
And that is a beautiful way to work indeed!
