If you ask 100 people about succeeding with content marketing, 90 of them will say “no”.

Here’s why.

They have believed a lie.

There are many lies they may have believed, such as …

Hi. This is Charlie Page, and the other day I received this question:

“What is content marketing anyway?”

Well here’s a definition, an official definition from the Content Marketing Institute. I have a lot of respect for these people.

“Content marketing is a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly defined audience — and ultimately, to drive profitable customer action.”

But you see, this definition’s a little bit complicated for me.

My definition is slightly different.

It’s helping people take another step.

That’s really what it is.

We all make progress in life one step at a time, and if you can help me take my next step, I’m going to love you forever.

Sometimes we need to tell the entire story, how something works, and why something works, and how to do it, and mistakes to avoid.

And content marketing can do that. There’s no question about it.

We’ve all read these three thousand word long pillar posts that say all of that in one chunk. And that’s fine.

But something that people miss, is that great content marketing is really not about you, or the person who creates the content, or how much you know.

It’s about the reader and what they need.

And what they need in many, many cases can best be understood by one question, “What do I do now?”

I bought your offer. What do I do now?

I have an autoresponder. What do I do now?

I have a blog and it’s pretty. What do I do now?

No matter who you are, or where you are in your life and your journey toward success, there is someone out there who needs to know what you know.

They need to know what to do now.

And if you help them, they’ll like you, they’ll trust you, they’ll join your list and yes, they will buy from you.

So how do you get started doing this type of content marketing? The type that helps real people solve real problems, without you having to become Hemingway and write these long complicated things.

Well, there are two words, start sharing.

When you learn something new, share it.

?When you fail, and you’re embarrassed, and you learn from your mistake, share that.

When you’re down and you’re discouraged, share that too.

And when you have a victory, by all means, share it.

And don’t just share a little bit.

Don’t just say, “Oh, something cool happened to me today.” Share the details.

People need to be encouraged in this world, and they need to learn from other people’s mistakes, so they don’t have to make the mistakes themselves.

Okay, so that all sounds good. We all know how to share. You’re ready to help other people. You understand reciprocity, that’s going to come back to you.

So where do you share it?

Well, number one, best place period, end of story, is your blog.

Your blog is your platform, it’s your home base.

I can tell people everywhere I go, “go to CharliePage.com, you’ll find everything I do.” All 40-something of my products, hundreds of articles, a way to contact me personally.

Your blog is your home base.

Number two, your email list.

?There are a lot of people who won’t visit your blog, but they will read your emails.

So send those emails every day and nurture the people on your email list.

Number three, social media. It’s a great place to share.

Number four, niche specific forums and chats. Most niches still have forums where people meet and talk, and they do chats with each other.

A lot of times that’s on Skype. A lot of times it’s on some kind of a private channel. Sometimes it’s Slack.

But niche specific forums and chats are a great place to share.

Medium.com is a great place for you to share.

It’s free to do, there are a lot of people reading things, you’ll develop a following, and here’s a wonderful thing, you’ll get to actually help real people.

And when you help them, you know what they’re going to want to do? They’re going to want to help you in return.

You can also go to Quora. Quora is a place where a lot of people ask questions and yes, some of the questions on there are just silly, because they’re trying to get publicity.

But hey, there are real people on Quora who need to know what you know.

Even if you feel right now what you know isn’t worth that much, believe me when I tell you, it is.

Now getting started is easy, and this type of content marketing just does not take much time.

It can actually be automated, and it can be helpful not only to you, but to the people who read it.

It can build your list, because when you help a person, they’re going to want to know more.

And it’s completely free to do, and free is a beautiful thing.

So try it, because it works, it really, really does.
